With only 5.6 percent of Africa’s population using the Internet — a total of 3.4 percent of the world’s Internet users — the digital divide seems almost too large to cross. However, digital innovation in Africa in the past five years has emerged in new, unimagined ways:
- Project Masiluleke in South Africa is utilizing the popularity of mobile phones by sending a million daily educational text messages about HIV/AIDS and TB over 12 months, starting in October 2008
- In November 2008, Google Insights reports that searches for the words “Barack Obama” in the previous year came overwhelmingly from African users. News aggregator AllAfrica.com reports that “Cameroon, Rwanda, Mali, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Ghana all placed ahead of the U.S. in a regional ranking of interest in the candidate’s name.”
- Wind-up radios, distributed in poverty-stricken areas of countries such as Mozambique, Ivory Coast, Angola and Namibia, remove the need for communities dependent on the radio for news to buy batteries.
- In parts of rural Africa, solar power keeps Ericsson base stations running, removing a dependency on an expensive and unreliable electricity grid.
- An 18-year-old Kenyan designs a “Block & Track” program that uses mobile-phone technology to disable stolen vehicles.

- In late 2007, Motorola completes a successful trial of a solar- and wind-powered mobile network in Namibia. Kenya-based WinAfrique Technologies has been providing renewable energy for telecommunications and water desalination since 2002.
- The Grid, a Java application for mobile users in South Africa, streams one-minute documentaries about youth culture in urban areas, geotagging each episode to a map of its street location.
- In 2008, War Crimes Watch List uses Facebook and Google Earth to track sightings of two Sudanese men wanted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court. In the same year, Nigerian scammers infiltrate Facebook accounts and send messages posing as users’ friends, asking for money.
- Kenyan citizens use mobile phones to broadcast news during post-election riots in 2008 — when broadcast news is restricted. The Committee to Protect Journalists warns that this technology could be used by riot antagonists.
