James Risen

James Risen is an investigative reporter with The New York Times, based in Washington. He broke the story of the Bush Administration’s illegal domestic wiretapping program, and also revealed, both in the New York Times and in his most recent book, State of War, the Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration, many other troubling aspects of George W. Bush’s war on terror. As a result, he was targeted by the Bush Administration, which threatened to either prosecute him for revealing classified information or send him to jail for refusing to reveal his sources. He is still under subpoena by a federal grand jury as part of a leak investigation into his book.

He is the winner of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting, the 2006 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, and was a member of the New York Times’ reporting team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting.

He is the author of three books: Wrath of Angels: The American Abortion War (Basic Books, 1998) The Main Enemy: The Inside Story of the Final Showdown Between the CIA and the KGB (Random House, 2003) and State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration (The Free Press, 2006).

Risen is married and has three children.
