Maddy Sauer joined ABC News in April 1999. She is the Managing Editor of “The Blotter”, ABCNews.com’s investigative page. As part of the Brian Ross Investigative Unit, she has also produced extensive reports for World News with Charles Gibson, Nightline, Good Morning America, and 20/20.
Maddy’s recent reports include an in-depth 20/20 story on women that had been raped or sexually assaulted in Iraq while working for Halliburton/KBR. That report made headlines and led to Congressional hearings. Another report examined a disturbing tale of campaign cash, vacation trips on the Riviera, and influence peddling in the West Virginia Supreme Court.
In 2006, Maddy broke the story of Congressman Mark Foley’s email and instant message exchanges with former Congressional pages. Her reporting on that scandal as well as other government officials’ unbecoming conduct led to a 2006 Peabody award and a News Emmy award.
Two recent reports on Primetime and Nightline focused on soldiers maimed in Iraq who have returned home to lives of poverty. Confronted with the facts in that report, a top Pentagon official admitted to errors in the system and promised that changes will be made immediately.
Other awards include a 2005 News Emmy award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism in a regularly-scheduled newscast for a World News Tonight report on “The Money Trail” series, which investigated the nexus of corporate money and politics, focusing on the corporate presence during the 2005 inaugural events. She also won a 2005 George Polk Award for a series of reports on “enhanced interrogation techniques” used by the CIA at secret detention centers around the world.
A native of Philadelphia, Maddy graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Manhattan.
